Demolition and Restoration

Demolition and Restoration Project at Santa Susana Field Laboratory

Simi Valley, CA

This project for NASA under a U.S. Army contract focuses on the demolition of two historic rocket engine test stands at Santa Susana Field Laboratory. The project encompasses extensive demolition, hazardous material management, utility disconnection, debris disposal, and site restoration efforts, all managed by a multidisciplinary team to ensure safety and environmental compliance throughout the process.

Project Highlights

  • USACE Safety Excellence Award

Due to the unwavering commitment to a strong safety culture amidst complex project hazards, Perma-Fix was awarded the USACE Safety Excellence Award.

  • Diverse Experience

For this project Perma-Fix has a highly experienced and multi-faceted team of professionals that are deployed to the site. These experts include: project managers, hazardous materials abatement and waste management specialists, demolition experts, safety professionals, structural engineers, crane and rigging experts, storm water management designers, botanists, and wildlife biologists.

  • Massive Demolition

There are two liquid fuel, static, hot-fire rocket engine test stands to be dismantled. The Test Stand 2 (TS2) demolition yielded 181 tons of steel removed and Test Stand 1 (TS1) is anticipated to produce over 2,200 tons of recyclable materials.

  • Abatement/Removal

Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACM) and Other Regulated Material (ORM) removed, disconnect/capping of utilities, and the complete removal of above-grade utilities.

Capabilities Delivered

This project, led by Perma-Fix's diverse team of specialists in project management, safety, and environmental protection, expertly balances project success with a strong commitment to safety.

Project Details

Under a U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center Pacific Region MATOC, we are performing a $4.5M facilities removal project for NASA at Santa Susana Field Laboratory. This demolition project at the Coca test area is highly complex, involving the dismantlement of two obsolete rocket engine test stands at the 2,668-acre former test facility located in the Simi Hills near Los Angeles, CA. The demolition of TS2, the smaller of two test stands, will remove and ship 181 tons of steel. TS1, the larger test stand, will yield more than 2,200 tons of metals and other recyclables.

The scope of this project also includes demolition of existing surface and subsurface structures, abatement/removal of ACM and ORM, disconnection/capping of utilities, complete removal of above-grade utilities, disposal of all debris, and site restoration.

A robust Perma-Fix safety culture is contributing significantly to the success of this project as the crew navigates the site's numerous hazards, including working at extreme heights, torch-cutting, and multiple activities occurring concurrently. Perma-Fix is also tasked with preventing damage to several species of trees and plants, mitigating the potential for stormwater pollution, and avoiding disturbance or harm to many types of birds, all while avoiding encounters with rattlesnakes, bobcats, and mountain lions that live in the rugged mountain terrain.
