Producing LDR Compliant Waste Forms for Mixed Wastes Debris
The Perma-Fix Northwest facility is ideal for processing mixed wastes requiring neutralization or stabilization. The Perma-Fix Northwest neutralization and stabilization process is suitable for liquids, sludges, soils, shreddable debris, and metals up to ¼ inch thick. Perma-Fix Northwest holds several profiles approved for disposal at the Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Site and Energy Solutions.

The Process
Mixed wastes are inspected and sampled in accordance with our RCRA Part B Permit requirements. A process recipe is developed based on tests on sample wastes. Large items are shredded in our large capacity waste shredder or sized as needed. Both shredding and sizing areas are fully enclosed in a negative air pressure, HEPA-ventilated environment. Following pre-treatment, waste is fed into a mixer along with stabilizing agents. After reaction with appropriate chemicals is complete, samples of processed wastes are analyzed to determine Land Disposal Restrictions (LDR) compliance. These processes typically involve some volume increase due to the addition of process chemicals. Use of efficient mixing systems helps maximize contact with the waste matrix and minimize any volume increase while ensuring an LDR compliant final waste form. With an active RCRA Part B Permit, Perma-Fix Northwest is able to receive nearly all waste types that require neutralization or stabilization. Final waste forms may be placed in a variety of different containers to maximize disposal efficiency and minimize disposal cost.

The Benefits

  • Use of a large capacity shredder helps maximize chemical contact with waste matrix while minimizing final disposal volume
  • Safe handling of high dose and high activity waste
  • Provides LDR compliant waste form
  • Allows final DOE compliant waste form to be disposed at Hanford low level cell
